#33. Struggling with Grief? Hereโ€™s How to Navigate Loss and Heal

Gepubliceerd op 6 april 2025 om 07:00

Grief is a deeply personal and often unpredictable journey. The loss of a loved one can feel overwhelming, leaving us unanchored. How do we find comfort and strength in these difficult times? How do we take small steps toward healing?

During an inspiring lecture by spiritual counselor Lucia de Jong (the Netherlands), it became clear that there are various sources of strength that can support us in grief. Lucia works with people facing cancer and their loved ones, using conversations and rituals to bring resilience and solace. Her insights help us see color in life again, even after loss.

Embracing Vulnerability as Strength

We often try to hide our vulnerability, but as Leonard Cohen said: "There is a crack in everything; that’s how the light gets in." In our fragility lies the potential for growth and connection. By embracing our emotions, we open ourselves to healing.

The Power of Hope and Beauty

Hope is not blind optimism but a deep knowing that even in darkness, a small light remains. Personally, I find that light in color. While black-and-white photography can be comforting, color brings me vitality and strength. Beauty also helps us process grief—whether it’s a sunrise, a piece of art, or a poem, it can touch us and remind us of life’s richness.

What Gives You Strength?

Everyone has unique sources of support that help navigate grief. Lucia shared several key elements of resilience:

๐ŸŒฟ Nature – The changing seasons, the wind, the sea; they mirror life and offer hope.
๐Ÿ“–
Books – Reading others’ experiences can provide deep comfort.
๐ŸŽจ
Art – Art moves us, opens our hearts, and shifts our perspectives.
๐ŸŽถ
Music – Melodies can soothe, uplift, and release emotions.
๐Ÿšถ
Rituals & Movement – Lighting a candle, walking, or journaling can be grounding.
๐Ÿค
Community & Connection – Family, friends, and support groups offer essential comfort.

The Power of Silence and Compassion

Beyond action, strength can also be found in stillness. In a fast-paced world, taking a moment of silence—whether through a walk in nature, time in a monastery, or quiet self-reflection—helps us reconnect with ourselves. Silence invites the question: Who am I after this loss?

Compassion is equally important. Grief often brings self-doubt: Could I have done more? But what we need most is kindness—both for ourselves and others. Comfort is found in small gestures: a listening ear, a hand on your shoulder, a thoughtful message.

Grieving and Healing Together

We are not meant to grieve alone. Healing happens through shared experiences—through stories, art, music, and connection. The ancient Greeks understood this, using theater to process pain. Today, we find solace in community and creative expression.

Grief invites us to reflect on life’s big questions: Why am I here? What is my purpose? Perhaps these questions don’t need definitive answers. Maybe it’s enough to know that we are on this journey together.
