#35. Weaving Grief into Life - Insights from Manu Keirse and the Healing Power of Nature

Gepubliceerd op 13 april 2025 om 07:00

Grief is not something to be processed and left behind. It becomes part of us, woven into the fabric of our lives. This profound perspective, shared by clinical psychologist Manu Keirse, deeply connects with me. I had the opportunity to attend one of his lectures at the crematorium in Tilburg. His words, his presence, and his wisdom reaffirmed the idea that grief does not need to be 'resolved' but integrated into who we are.

Manu Keirse - A Guide Through Loss

Manu Keirse is a leading expert on grief and loss, known for his compassionate approach and ability to translate complex emotions into words that comfort and heal. His books and lectures offer a lifeline to those navigating loss. One of his most powerful insights is that grief is not something to be 'processed'. A term more fitting for waste management than for human emotion. Instead, he emphasizes that grief remains a part of us, shaping our lives and identities in new ways.

At the lecture, he spoke about how those we love never truly leave us. He beautifully described death as “moving from the outer world to the hearts of those who love you.” This perspective aligns with my belief in the healing power of nature photography, just as grief transforms us, so too does our relationship with nature. Both provide solace, reflection, and a sense of continuity.

Finding Strength in Books and Art

Books have long been a source of comfort in times of loss. Reading the words of others who have walked a similar path can bring a sense of connection and understanding. Manu Keirse’s works, along with books on nature, strength, and mindfulness, serve as guiding lights when navigating grief.

Art as well has the power to hold space for emotions that words cannot express. My own journey with abstract photography has led me to explore themes of temporary nature, connection, and healing. Recently, a selection of my images from the Stardust series has been chosen for display at Hoeve de Zwingel, a natural burial site and crematorium. This reinforces the idea that art can offer comfort in spaces where grief is most evident.

Nature as a Place of Reflection and Healing

Much like the insights of Manu Keirse, nature teaches us that everything is interconnected. The changing seasons mirror the cycles of loss and renewal. Standing beneath a vast starry sky or walking through a quiet forest, we are reminded that life continues, even in the face of sorrow.

This is the foundation of Earth Embrace - the idea that nature photography can provide solace, just as being in nature does. Research in environmental psychology has shown that viewing nature images reduces stress, fosters emotional balance, and enhances well-being. Whether it’s a forest bathed in golden light or the gentle ripples of a lake, nature’s beauty has an undeniable capacity to heal.
