#18. How a Frozen Leaf Changed My Life as a Nature Photographer

Gepubliceerd op 27 januari 2025 om 10:56

Research shows that even just looking at nature images reduces stress and brings calm. For those who cannot go outside, photos provide a valuable alternative to experience the positive impact of nature.

Abstract nature photography goes beyond providing calm; it invites reflection and personal interpretation. While landscape photography often evokes awe, abstract photography opens the door to a personal experience where every shape and color takes on its own meaning. My work is often used by grief therapists because photos can express emotions when words fall short. They open conversations that might otherwise go unspoken.

With Troostkunst, I want to help people during difficult phases of life – with grief, stress, or other challenges. I invite you to experience the peace, strength, and reflection that nature and photography have to offer. Let yourself be reconnected with the calming energy of Mother Earth and find your way to emotional well-being, supported by hope, light, and resilience.

A Journey of Healing and Reflection

My journey as a photographer truly began in 2017 during a course called Discover Your Style at CKE in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. What began as a creative challenge evolved into a profound process of healing. The course sparked my passion for abstract nature photography and even fostered a lasting friendship that continues to inspire me.

A poem by Paulo Coelho became the foundation of my first photo series, Circle of Life. In it, he writes about the life cycle through the perspective of a leaf falling from a tree:

"You may think you are dying, but you live in me. Your life is in my life; we are one."

These words struck a chord deep within me, reminding me that joy and sorrow, growth and decay, are beautifully intertwined. I wanted to capture that idea through my photography.

The Circle of Life: How Nature Photography Connects Grief and Hope

The series consists of six images, each with a dreamy, mysterious atmosphere. One photo, my most personal, shows decaying leaves encased in a thin layer of ice. Subtle rays of light break through the cracks, symbolizing how grief and hope coexist.

Creating these images helped me navigate my own grief, offering clarity and solace. Through abstract nature photography, I’ve found a way to inspire others to reflect on their emotions. Grief, after all, is not an end but a transition - a chance to heal and rediscover hope.

Finding Light in Dark Times

I aim to offer hope through my work. Whether it’s a piece of art that brings tranquility to someone’s home or an image that commemorates a loved one, I want my photos to be a source of light.

Even in life’s darkest moments, nature reminds us that light can always be found - even in the smallest cracks.

What inspires you to find light in dark times? I’d love to hear your reflections and experiences. If my work resonates with you, feel free to explore more of my photos or connect with me.
